February filled with Black History events
By Noely Gonzalez

In recognition of Black History Month, several events will be hosted by EPCC that will include a guest speaker, jazz music, fashion and food throughout the campuses in February.

“It’s an opportunity for African-American faculty, staff and students to celebrate their heritage,” said Robert Pandy, Black History Month committee chairperson.

“I want students to gain awareness of their culture.”

The first event, taking place on Feb. 4, will present retired Assistant Chief of Police Paul Cross who will talk about what it was like being a black officer in El Paso.

The second event, on Feb. 11, is called Jazz Night.

A variety of African-American dishes will be offered, such as crackling corn bread, fried corn, black-eyed peas and fried catfish.

Jazz music will also be played by local high schools. EPCC ‘s jazz band, The Disciples of Jazz, will be playing as well.

The third event this year is The Colors of Harmony, which, according to Pandy, is meant to show the positive things African-Americans are doing in the community.

There will be food and a fashion show Feb. 16.

Arvis Jones, director of Student Leadership and Campus Life said, “I am a black person every day. [Black History Month] goes back to the recognition of a particular culture. It’s sad that we recognize this culture only once a year when all tributes of every culture should be recognized everyday.”

The fourth event is called the Who’s Who among African-American High School Students and is also organized by Jones.

This event gives local juniors and seniors a chance to display the work they have done in their schools, churches and communities.

“It’s about learning and having a good time,” said Pandy.

The final event, Feb. 25, will feature nine local choirs singing gospel music. The Cross speech, Choir Night, Who’s Who and Jazz night will all be at the Transmountain Forum Theater at 7 p.m.

ESL Instructor Tracy Von Maluski was in charge of gaining publicity and has notified several local media stations and the El Paso Times.

“It is always exciting when an African-American community comes together,” said Pandy. “We always have fun.”
