James A. Gonzales

 Professor of English

James Gonzales received his master’s degree in English from San Jose State University—where he studied symbolism and mythology with Harvey Birenbaum, the renowned Shakespearean scholar; Irish literature with Marian Robinson, a connoisseur of the works of James Joyce; creative writing with the Poet Laureate of Silicon Valley, Nils Peterson; and the New Rhetoric with Philip Cook, a disciple of the great Francis Christensen.  As a teacher at El Paso Community College, Gonzales has taught composition and literature classes, trying to give to his students what his teachers gave him, a love of language and confidence in self-expression.  He is the coordinator of two Spring Arts Festival events—the Poetry Slam and Reading Chaucer in Middle English.
