Our mission is to help you succeed in your coursework and stay in college until you finish your certificate/degree or are ready to transfer to a four-year college or university. As an El Paso Community College student, you undoubtedly have other responsibilities besides simply going to your classes and completing your coursework. You may work a part-time or even full-time job, in addition to being the primary caretaker of a child or an elderly parent or grandparent. You may believe you don’t have the extra time to devote to seeking help outside of the classroom, but there are many important reasons why you must make the time.
One of the most important characteristics of a successful student is the ability and willingness to seek out help as soon as, and oftentimes, before, it is needed. Students who are successful can acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses and are pro-active in making sure that their weaknesses are supported. Successful students realize that making the time to come to the Valle Verde Writing Center early in the semester before a crisis situation arises can mean the difference between passing and failing a class. Failing even a single class can sometimes be so discouraging that it can lead students to drop out of college altogether.
Recognize the challenge you’ve set for yourself (school, plus work, plus family) and accept the idea that you may need tutoring help many times over again until you’ve completed all of your education goals.
The tutoring services provided at the Writing Center are free. They are included in the tuition charges you pay at the beginning of each semester in recognition of the fact that college classes are often extraordinarily challenging, even for highly intelligent students. You want to succeed in fulfilling your dream. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be here. Our tutors and staff can help make sure you meet your goals by supporting you every step of the way.
