STS within the Community

Along with assisting El Paso Community College (EPCC) with their technology needs, Student Technology Services (STS), also tries to get involved in the community and assist with community's technology needs as well.

The USO  and  United Through Reading

STS is currently volunteering at the United Service Organization (USO) with the United Through Reading (UTR) program. The UTR is a program which helps military families stay connected with video recorded readings. The process of a UTR recording is as follows: The soldier arrives at the USO and STS students registers them with their information. Then, the soldier chooses from a variety of books provided by UTR from which he/she will be reading. The books range from infant to teenage age groups. STS students escort them to the room in which the recording will take place and explain to him/her that they will have up to 30 minutes and that they will be left alone, so they can have their privacy. When the soldier finishes, the STS student will then finalize the DVD, prepare the package which will included the DVD, the book the soldier read, and some information about the UTR program. Finally, the package is mailed to the solider' s family by the USO.

The Happiness Senior Center

In an ongoing effort, STS is training members of Happiness Senior Center on basic computer skills.  The computers were donated from and delivered by EPCC to the senior center.  STS has been teaching Ted Garcia, Yolanda Guerrero, and other Happiness members how to operate the computer; from how to power the computers on and off to working with applications, such as OpenOffice.  Other trainings include file management and working with documents (editing, saving, and printing). STS conducts these training twice a week, usually in the mornings.
