Q1. What happens to the recyclables after you deposit them into the blue bins?
Recyclables will be collected by the janitorial service and placed in the recycling dumpsters. Friedman Recycling Company will collect them from the dumpsters and then sort out the comingled materials for recycling through a series of manual and mechanical sorting. After the separation and bailing process, the material is sold to the end users who turn them into new products.
Q2. What can I recycle in the blue bin at EPCC?
Cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans. Recyclables should not contain food residue. Please rinse.
Q3. Can I recycle plastic bags in the EPCC Recycling Program?
Yes! We now accept plastic bags in our recycling bins. They need to be empty of other materials (receipts, bottles, anything) and place about 5-10 bags into one plastic bag. This will reduce the chance of them flying away and ending up in our desert. Remember it is better to bring your own reusable bags when you shop.
Q4. Do I have to separate the different types of materials for recycling?
No, do not separate the materials for recycling, with the exception of shredded paper. This needs to be placed in a bag before putting it in the blue bin.
Q5. Are pizza boxes recyclable?
Due to the food contamination, pizza boxes are not recyclable.
Q6. Can paper and cardboard with tape on it be recycled?
Some tape is acceptable, but excessive tape can gup up production machinery and reduce operational efficiency, so you should try to remove as much tape as can easily be removed before recycling. Remember to flatten your cardboard boxes.
Q7. Can I recycle glass at EPCC?
No. Glass is not accepted in our recycling bins but you might want to take it to Target Store where you can place them in one of the recycling bins.
Q8. What can NOT be put into the recycling bin?
Food waste or liquids
Containers with food residuals
Waxed paper or waxed cardboard
Tissues, napkins, paper towels
Q9. Do beverage containers such as bottles and cans have to be rinsed out for recycling?
It is not required to rinse out the containers but you need to make sure that your recyclables are empty and in some cases you might need to rinse them out to remove food residue.
Q10. Can I recycle ink and toner cartridges?
Yes! Ink and toner cartridges can be recycled by sending them to Physical Plant at the Valle Verde Campus. You can also send batteries and e-waste such as personal computers and cellphones. Please remember to NOT place these items in the recycling blue containers since they have a different process.
