Claude Mathis

Hello, and welcome to the Division of Communication and Performing Arts at the Valle Verde Campus of El Paso Community College. My name is Claude Mathis and I am the Academic Dean.



This Division of Instruction includes the following disciplines:

  • Advertising Graphics and Design
  • The Americana Language Program
  • Dance
  • Digital Video Production
  • Drama
  • English
  • Foreign Languages
  • Mass Communication
  • Music
  • Speech

The Division Office is located at MV10. It’s really easy to get here. The MV stands for “Modular Village.” These are the “temporary” metal buildings on the Phoenix side of the Campus. Sometimes I wonder why we call them “temporary;” they’ve been here for 25 years! But the Modular Village has really great trees, grass, bushes, benches, a gazebo, and an outdoor stage . . . .  It’s really pretty nice, a great place to take a walk, take your lunch, be wireless—listen to RadioEPCC, for example. It’s part of our Division, you know.  In case you don’t know how to stream up, it’s www.epcc.edu/radio. A pretty shameless plug, I know, but I really think you should listen in and help us make it your radio station!

When you visit the Division Office, you will meet the other really good and talented people who serve along with me there. We provide assistance with Registration and Instructional issues.



Registration Assistance:
Sometimes, usually just before it’s time for classes to begin or in the add/drop time after classes have already begun, students have trouble finding an open seat in a class that they need because most of the sections are closed. If you find yourself in this situation, my staff will work with you to help you find an open seat at Valle Verde if we can. If not, we will help you explore openings at one of the other campuses, or possibly online. If we still cannot find you a seat for that particular course, we will explore the possibility of taking something else that will serve you in your degree plan and you can postpone taking the course that is unavailable to the next semester. Obviously, it’s is always better to avoid this situation by registering early to make sure you get the class you need at the time that best suits your schedule, but that may not always be possible. If you need help with registration in our Division, we will be very happy to do what we can to help you.



Instructional Issues:
If you experience some difficulty in one of the classes in this Division, the first person you should go to for assistance is your instructor. Even if it is an issue with the instructor him or herself, I believe that your instructor deserves to know how you are feeling so s/he can have a chance to fix the problem or help you understand why things are the way they are. That’s why if you come to my office about an instructional issue, the first thing we will ask you is if you have already spoken with your instructor about it. If you have and are still experiencing a problem, or if you feel that you have a really serious reason you cannot speak with your instructor first, we will ask you to fill out a form to document the issue in writing. If I am in the office and available to speak with you at that moment, I will. If I am not in the office or for some other reason I am unavailable at that moment, my staff will set up a time for us to meet as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if happens that you are exceptionally happy with the instruction in our Division, I would love to hear about this as well!



Some Free Advice:

  1. Set good educational goals for yourself. By this I mean that you should follow your dream, believe in yourself, aim high, and go for it.
  2. Get help. You are surrounded by people who have knowledge that you can use and who would love the chance to share it with you: your family, your friends, your classmates, your teachers, counselors, librarians, administrators like me, staff members like Irene, Eva and Sonia; we are all around you and we want you to succeed!
  3. Take care of yourself. Learn how college is; know and follow the rules; read your syllabus; go to class; work hard; respect your teachers and your classmates and they will probably respect you back; live well = take care of your health; plan; and be sure that you find ample time for family, friends, work, and school.
  4. Be happy and share your happiness with others.

 Vitae

Claude Mathis began his career at El Paso Community College as an adjunct instructor of English as a Second Language in 1987. In 1992, he became a full-time instructor in the Americana Language Program, EPCC’s continuing education English as a Second Language Program. In 2003, he became the Dean of Communication and Performing Arts at the Valle Verde Campus.

As Dean of the Communication Arts, he manages the Americana Language Program, English, Foreign Languages, Mass Communication, and Speech Communication. He also supervises two related Occupational Education programs, Media Production and Advertising Graphics and Design. As Dean of the Performing Arts, he manages Dance, Drama, and Music. Serving these disciplines at the Valle Verde campus includes responsibility for supervising 46 full-time faculty members, 137 part-time instructors, and numerous support staff members. Also reporting to Mr. Mathis is the Community Education Program, located on the Rio Grande Campus, which provides grant-funded educational services to migrant workers and other underserved local populations.

  • Mr. Mathis is also a member of the following College committees:

    • The Developmental English Standing Committee (Administrative Liaison)
    • The UTEP/EPCC Joint Articulation Committee
    • and serves as a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Advisory Committee for the Lower Division Academic Course Guide Manual

    Mr. Mathis holds a B.A. in Inter-American Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso, where he did graduate coursework in History and Applied Linguistics qualifying him to teach in these disciplines at the college level. He holds an M.A. in Education/TESOL from New Mexico State University, where he is currently ABD in Educational Management and Development
