The value of information as an institutional resource is increased and its accuracy maintained through its appropriate use and protection. That value is diminished when its confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility are compromised through misuse, improper access, erroneous alteration, or unnecessary restrictions to its access.
El Paso Community College and its students, faculty, and staff must operate in compliance with Federal privacy guidelines for students, patients, financial customers (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA, ECPA, and Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act). It is an important part of our duties to ensure that personal data is used only in ways that our clients wish it to be used. Although we all welcome the products and enhanced services made possible by extensive data collection, we also want assurance that proper protection is afforded our personal information. We also want some control over how our personal information will be accessed, used, and redistributed.
