Center for Students with Disabilities

Assistive technology is available at each campus site. The main Assistive Technology Lab is located at Valle Verde.


The CSD Assistive Technology Labs are open during regular office hours: 8 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.


Assistive technology available includes the following adaptive equipment and many more devices and programs that help students with disabilities.

Students registered with the Center for Students with Disabilities are welcome to use the Assistive Technology lab and can schedule services directly with the Assistive Technology Specialist.

Kurzweil

The Kurzweil is a machine which scans printed material and reads it aloud to the print disabled student. Students can record material on tape or save it to a computer disk to study at home.

The Kurzweil 3000 uses a multi-sensory approach – presenting printed or electronic text on the computer screen with added visual and audible accessibility. It extends the essential learning process by reinforcing mastery of subject material through repetition, definition, outlining and annotation, and by allowing users to work as efficiently and independently as possible.

The Aladdin Genie (closed caption television) is a black and white video magnifier designed for use by people who have visual impairments which make it difficult or impossible for them to read ordinary printed materials.

Dragon Dictate is speech recognition software that enables students to create, edit, format and move text by voice directly in virtually any Windows applications. The student can even operate a pc totally hands-free with voice commands and mouse control.

The Braille Blazer is compact, quiet, and gives you high-quality Braille on many sizes of Braille paper, plastic labels and even index cards. Its internal speech synthesizer allows quick and simple configuration that can be used with any PC.
